Strong neighborhoods

Core Vision #1- Strengthening and preserving our neighborhoods

Charlotte has historically encouraged citizens to get involved with their communities, which has contributed to our growth by attracting smart, talented people from all over the country. This attitude must be nurtured and encouraged if we are to raise the social capital needed to address the issues that threaten our quality of life.

Charlotte has been uniquely blessed with a City Council that invests vast amounts of time and resources in troubled neighborhoods, funding capital investment projects such as roads, sidewalks and streetscape improvements. I’ve personally worked with organizations that have teamed with the city to rehabilitate neighborhoods like Greenville, Genesis Park, Seversville, Lakewood and Druid Hills. The Federal Government has contributed too, bestowing the city with four HOPE VI grants to help redevelop some of the most challenged public housing sites in our city.

City Council must continue to help strengthen and preserve our neighborhoods, while supporting developments that contribute to our economy. I’m uniquely qualified to address these issues, having championed these same causes during my 12-year tenure with the Planning Commission and Housing Partnership. Whenever neighborhood re-zoning, planning and/or policy issues were discussed, I leveraged this experience to enlighten my colleagues about the importance of devising solutions that are mutually advantageous to all affected parties.

As a council member, I will use my experience and love for this region to help preserve and maintain our historic communities and neighborhoods while also helping us prepare for the inevitable growth that’s still to come. I will also leverage my role as a National Urban Advisor with the Urban Land Institute to research best practices from other cities that we can apply in ours. I’m a Charlottean through and through ─ so strengthening and preserving our neighborhoods is a labor of love that I’m proud to contribute to.
