Quality of Life
Core Vision #3 – Improve the quality of life for all of our citizens by promoting public safety, improved air quality, accessible and amenable transportation options, better conditions for the elderly and other strong, community-minded initiatives.
Charlotteans have always understood the connection between economic development, population growth and quality of life. We didn’t want Charlotte to become the next hot fad city, but rather a place where people would want to raise their families. We desired a lifestyle replete with every conceivable amenity.
That’s why, in the ‘80s, we built a new airport many said was too large for us, and an NBA arena to accommodate a team we didn’t yet have. When we did procure a team the Hornets we set league attendance records for nearly a decade. Later, the argument was that we couldn’t support two professional sports teams; but our beloved Panthers have become one of the most respected and valued teams in the NFL.
Charlotte has become a top destination for individuals and families. To maintain and grow this perception, our citizens must feel safe in their homes and have access to housing in quality neighborhoods. We must also do more to protect and care for our senior citizens, allowing them to ‘age in place’ for as long as they so desire.
Our track record of community service and volunteerism continues attract smart, talented people from all over. But as the largest city in the region, we must champion issues like air and water quality, public transportation and other concerns if we hope to see this growth continue.
By employing the same intentional, forward thinking ideologies of our past leaders and maintaining strong ties between our local elected bodies and the business community, we can help Charlotte achieve even more growth and prosperity. And we can help assure that both newcomers and longtime residents will be able to enjoy similarly outstanding qualities of life for themselves and their families.
